Hyperdrive Innovation, developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion battery technology, today announces it has formed a strategic partnership with Hybria, one of Finland’s leading suppliers of hybrid and electric driveline integrations. Helsinki region -based Hybria supplies complete electric drivetrains and system components for Non-Road Mobile Machinery and special vehicles.
Hyperdrive will collaborate with Hybria to supply its world-leading Li-ion battery systems to develop a range of prototypes to showcase the engineering expertise of both companies. The prototypes will include a new generation of electrified snow vehicles, construction machines, boats, materials handling and farming equipment designed to operate in all weather conditions.
Hybria is already working with partners on a number of projects including a mini electric bus called the Gacha Shuttle Bus. The bus is designed to work autonomously in challenging weather, especially heavy rain and snow, and is scheduled to go into operation for the first time in Helsinki, Finland in 2020. Hybria has developed complete electric four-wheel drive drivetrain and 25kWh battery system with electrical pre-heating for the bus. Pre-heating is supplied from mains and it can be used to heat up batteries after overnight parking in extreme cold weather conditions. The electric bus runs at speeds of up to 40 kph and accommodates 16 people. After the unveiling, the Gacha shuttle bus will start its final phase of testing, before operating a passenger service in three Finnish cities.
The partnership with Hybria is part of Hyperdrive’s strategy to expand its international reach. In April 2018, Hyperdrive signed a long-term agreement with one of the world’s largest manufacturers Foxlink Automotive Technology to manufacture, sell and distribute its modular battery pack under Hyperdrive’s intellectual property rights across Asia.
Chris Pennison, CEO of Hyperdrive, commented: “This is an exciting new partnership and working closely with Hybria, we will be able to access the Scandinavian market. Scandinavia is a part of the world where electrification of vehicles is a priority. Our joint expertise in batteries and electric drivetrains is hugely complementary to our strategy to provide a game-changing energy storage offer for electric machines which provides a compelling alternative to and can operate in the same environment as a ‘pure’ diesel power equivalent.”
Matti Heiska, Sales and Operations Manager at Hybria, commented: “Together with Hyperdrive, we are able to provide world leading battery technology in the Scandinavian and Baltics market. As a robust and modular system, Hyperdrive’s product responds to our customer demands of fast and flexible battery system integration in low and medium volume vehicle manufacturers. Hyperdrive battery packs perfectly broaden our existing product portfolio of electric vehicle components and strengthen our position as a leading supplier of complete electric vehicle systems. Besides the vehicle industry, our partnership with Hyperdrive allows us to participate in growing our stationary energy storage market.”
