James Coulson

Newcastle University undergraduate, 21-year-old James Coulson, may have the world at his feet but he found the perfect launch pad to his career was on his doorstep.
James, from Newcastle embarked on a four year of a Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Mechatronics.
Very career focused, he made a point of contacting Hyperdrive after hearing managing director, Stephen Irish, speak at an IMECHE event. He was enthralled by the company and the role it was playing in the sphere of advanced technologies in the automotive sector.
With both James and the company equally impressed with each other’s drive and ambition, he was offered a three month placement at the end of his second year and this was repeated at the end of his third year. With James demonstrating an ability to use both his own initiative at the appropriate time and also to be a team player, the company decided to invest further in him by way of a monthly bursary during term time.
James, said: “It really is the most stimulating environment to work in. I am learning from top class people, understanding the link between design and production and putting my skills to work on a wide variety of projects in different markets – automotive, marine and defence.
“I have even had the privilege of working on the prototype version of the Nissan Navaro pick-up truck – The EnGuard. In the rear there are auxiliary battery units to power electrical drills and power saws for use in mountain rescue situations. I helped build the battery packs which included wiring and software development. It was invaluable experience all of which took place in a friendly, supportive and highly professional team environment.
“The company has fantastic potential and the fact that they offer both prototyping and scalable production differentiates them from so many others in the sector.”
